Welcome to Xanadu

Xanadu Productions specialises in the production of high-quality, in-depth films about China. It is the only production company in the UK with this specific remit.

Xanadu has produced some of the best programming on China in the UK to date. Our broadcast productions are primarily current affairs documentaries, but the company has also worked in conjunction with other specialist production companies in the genres of arts, history and wildlife.

Making programmes, either for broadcast, non-broadest or corporate, requires in-depth cultural knowledge about China – and Xanadu is uniquely placed to deliver this.

As far back as 1996 we recognised China's emergence as a major world player. Since then Xanadu has developed a unique profile, building up an unparalleled range of experience and contacts. Both directors of the company, Stephen Hallett and Maggie Still, have lived and worked in China over many years.

Maggie Still

Maggie has had an interest in China since living and working there as a TV presenter in 1990. Before that she trained at and worked for the BBC in both radio and television. Later as a freelance on a wide range of international documentary programmes.

She has worked on numerous award winning documentaries and projects for Xanadu. She believes passionately in the importance of engagement with the people and culture of China.

Stephen Hallett

Stephen has lived and worked in China since 1980. He is a recognized specialist in Chinese affairs with track records in TV and radio production, media training and social entrepreneurship. He speaks Mandarin like a Beijinger and reads and writes Chinese fluently. But he doesn't let his involvement with China cloud his objectivity. Stephen is passionate about the power of documentary as a means to inform, entertain and break down barriers. "Since the earliest times people have told stories", he says. "A good documentary tells a story in an engaging, multi-dimensional way".
